Mini cyclone strikes Ampaa’rai coast

The mini cyclone that hit the coastal areas of Ampaa’rai in Batticaloa district swept over for more than 10 minutes Sunday around 9:45 a.m leaving more than a hundred houses and properties damaged, sources in Ampaa’rai said. Kalmunaikkudi, Chainthamaruthu, Chammaanththu’rai, Kalmunai, Maruthamunai and Thu’raineelaava’nai are some of the places hit by the cyclone. The settlements of tsunami refugees were also affected in Chaainthamaruthu and Kaavaakuvaddai villages, the sources said.

Transport service in the above area was affected as strong gale and rain lashed bringing down a hundred feet surrounding wall of Thu’raineelaava’nai Maha Viththiyalayam and the big tree in front of Chammaanththu’rai government hospital.

Batticlao too had been hit by the above cyclone Sunday morning, the sources said.
