Sri Lanka police spokesman and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), I. M. Karunaratne, claimed that the main suspect in the bomb attack on Sri Lanka Central Bank in 1996 has been taken into custody in Cheddiku’lam in Vavuniyaa district when he tried to get out of the detention camp with a forged National Identity Card (NIC).

The suspect, though 53 years old, had tried to leave the camp under the procedure under which persons over 60 are allowed to go away, he said.

The main suspect in the bomb attack had taken 440 pounds explosives in his lorry to Colombo from Vavuniyaa in 1996, according to police claims.

Colombo Supreme Court had sentenced 200 years imprisonment in 2002 even in the absence of the suspect, Chellathamby Navaratnam, the police spokesman said.
