Bus passengers through A9 road suffer undue delay

Passengers travelling in Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses through A9 road between Jaffna and Vavuniyaa are held for nearly six to eight hours in their buses until Sri Lanka Army (SLA) allow the buses to leave in a convoy, civil society sources in Jaffna raised concern. The passengers are not allowed to get down from the buses even to answer calls of nature, they said.

Persons travelling to Vavuniyaa from Jaffna who report at Jaffna Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya early in the morning, after checks and the delay, reach Vavuniyaa only after midnight.

The passengers from Vavuniyaa to Jaffna too experience the same inconveniences. They have to start their journey from SLA Earatperiyaku’lam early in the morning reach Jaffna only after midnight.

Meanwhile, despite government publicity that lorries are allowed to ply freely along A9 road, transport still remains a problem.

The long delay in the journey between Jaffna and Vavuniyaa is due to SLA restrictions, SLTB Jaffna sources said.
