Tropical Storm Ward to hit Sri Lanka

indiawidesatellite.sce Tropical Storm Ward, which is tracking westwards through the Bay of Bengal, is expected to hit the coast of Sri Lanka overnight on Sunday.

While sustained wind speeds are relatively moderate at 40mph (64km/h) with higher gusts, extreme rainfall is expected in many areas. Cyclone warnings have been issued across Sri Lanka in northern, eastern and Uva provinces. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out of port.

Forecasters predict Ward will weaken on landfall before re-emerging in the Gulf of Mannar where it will track towards Tamil Nadu in southern India.
