Heavy floods in East, 3 killed, IDP camps under water

Lightning claimed the lives of three people and more than 25,000 have been displaced due to heavy floods as cyclone ‘Ward’ entered the Eastern coast Monday night. Vaakarai, Vaalaichcheanai, Kaaththaankudi and Vavu’natheevu are among the worst affected areas in Batticaloa. Meanwhile, all the huts of ‘welfare centers’ located in Moothoor East and Eachchilampattu in Trincomalee district where hundreds of internally displaced Tamil families, still sheltered awaiting resettlement in their own villages, are under water due to torrential rain now being experienced. Roofs of these huts have been blown off due to gale winds due to depression that moves along the coast of North and East.

In Ampaa’rai district, almost 70 per cent of the paddy cultivation, including most of the district’s interior roads, are flooded, according to news reports from the district.

The lightning deaths were reported from Ampaa’rai and Batticaloa.

Meanwhile huts in welfare centers located in Paddiththidal, Ma’nal-cheanai and Ki’liveddi where IDPs of Champoor area are sheltered have also been damaged by rain water and gale winds. Inmates of these centers including children, elders and pregnant women are undergoing immense hardships without proper dwelling facilities. About three thousand IDPs of villages in Champoor area have been staying in these welfare centers as they are not allowed to return to their homes that have come under the so-called High Security Zones claimed by the Sri Lanka Army.

Three hundred members of twenty nine IDP families of Eachchilampattu and currently being sheltered in welfare centers in Chinnaku’lam and Udaapukkea’ni are again displaced. The IDPs have sought refuge in alternative sites, according to Trincomalee district parliamentarian K.Thurairetnasingham.

Mr. Thurairatnesingham has brought the plight of the IPDs to the notice of the District Additional Government Agent urging him to make immediate arrangement to provide alternative shelters to them. The IDPs have not been allowed to resettle in their own villages in Eachchilampattu division by the Sri Lanka Army but being held in the so-called welfare centers.
