“Tamils should claim rights gradually” – Douglas Devananda

Tamils have been reduced to the stage where they cannot no longer fight for their rights. Their non-violent approaches as well as armed struggle have failed leaving them in a situation where they can only claim their rights step by step, Minister Dougala Devananda said Saturday in a press meet held in Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) office in Jaffna Srithar theatre. The minister further said that EPDP will take full responsibility of the consequences arising by Tamils in North and East voting for President Mahinda Rajapakse in the forthcoming presidential election.

One cannot expect to get what they want in the first instance itself. We have to begin from the basic needs and then gradually claim our rights. I am certain that we will be able to find a just solution for our problems by first accepting a solution based on the 13th amendment and then claim our rights step by step, Douglas Devananda said.

Supporting a new candidate will only place the Tamils right back in the first square while it is sensible to vote Mahinda Rajapakse to power so that we could continue our claims from the present situation, he said.

Referring to the recent Zurch conference Douglas Devananda said that it mainly failed as its agenda was drawn by a foreign power. He further questioned as to why the Tamils should seek foreign involvement in solving our problems while there are senior and experienced Tamil political leaders like Sampanthan, Sitharthan and Thondaiman among us.

The minister alleged that Sivajilingam, the Tamil presidential candidate, for bargaining with the government of Sri Lanka; Sivajilingam has promised the government that he will support it provided he is allowed to continue his activities freely in Sri Lanka, said.

In conclusion Douglas Devananda said that the displaced people of Valikaamam North will be resettled immediately after the presidential election.

He also promised to take action to remove the army check posts where people are subjected to inconveniences.
