Rice that is distributed as relief food for the resettled IDPs and other needy people in Jaffna district by the government of Sri Lanka is of very poor quality and unsuitable for consumption, according to concerns raised by Non-government Organizations in Jaffna. All relief dry food items are purchased by the Commissioner of Essential Services (CES) in Colombo and sent to Jaffna for distribution, Jaffna Secretariat officials said. The officials further said that they distribute what is sent to Jaffna by the CES.
Nearly 60% of the people in Jaffna district depend on relief dry food supplied by the government for their living.
Rice, flour, sugar, dhal and cooking oil are some of the dry food relief ration and among these rice is most important for the people.
Resettled IDPs, persons evicted from their places by Sri Lanka Army and those who had lost their means of living due to war are recepients of relief food in Jaffna district.
The quality of the rice that is now distributed being unfit for consumption people in many places have refused to accept it and staged protests demanding better rice.
