Northern Province Governor, Major General G. A. Chandrasiri announced Monday that the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) imposed curfew on Jaffna peninsula will be completely lifted, in a meeting held in Jaffna to gather support to Mahinda Rajapakse in the forthcoming presidential election, sources in Jaffna said. Minister Douglas Devananda, Jaffna Government Agent K. Ganesh, Jaffna University Vice-chancellor took part in the meeting along with ardent supporters of Mahinda Rajapakse, the sources added.
SLA imposed a full night time curfew on Jaffna peninsula on 8 August 2006 which had been gradually reduced in the number of hours.
At present the curfew is imposed from 12:00 a.m to 3:30 a.m.
SLA High Command in Palaali, however, has not confirmed the announcement.
Several concessions in view of the presidential election were also considered in the meeting.
