Basil Rajapakse expected to visit Jaffna

Basil Rajapakse, the brother and senior advisor to president Mahinda Rajapakse, will be arriving in Jaffna Wednesday to engage in election campaign for Mahinda Rajapakse who is expected to visit Jaffna on 9 January, according to a press notification released by Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) Tuesday. Meanwhile, United National Party will begin its election campaign in Jaffna peninsula from 11 January, sources in Jaffna said.

The EPDP announcement said that Basil Rajapakse will first worship at Keerimalai Nakuleasvarn temple where he will also bathe in the temple pond.

He will then proceed to Thellippazhai where he will meet the IDPs selected for rehabilitation near THellippazhai Union College.

Basi Rajapakse will next meet representatives of co-operative unions in Veerasingham Hall in Jaffna town and then from there go to Veala’nai in the islets of Jaffna where he will meet the representatives of fidheries societies.

A meeting with farmers has also been arranged to take place in Oorezhu playground.

Basil Rajapakse’s visit is aimed at preparing the grounds for Mahinda Rajapakse when he comes to Jaffna for election campaign, sources in Jaffna said.

Concessions and important decisions related to Resettlement in High Security Zones, Safety of fishermen and aids to farmers are to be announced Wednesday, EPDP sources said.

Meanwhile, UNP sources in Jaffna said that UNP area organizers in Jaffna peninsula will go house to house along with UNP political leaders from the South canvassing votes for Sarath Fonseka.
