District magistrate Mr. K. Ariyanaygam expressed grave concern over the alarming rise of cultural decadence, illegal activities and crime in Jaffna peninsula when he spoke to police and government officers Friday after having assumed duties as Mallaakam District magistrate, sources in Jaffna said. Meanwhile, civil society representatives in Jaffna alleged members of Sri Lanka armed forces occupying Jaffna for the circulation of porno CDs and films among students, illicit sale of liquor and running brothels in Jaffna town.
Liquor brought from the South and local illegal brewing of liquor in Jaffna are some of the causes for the youths in Jaffna peninsula to be led in wrong paths, the magistrate told the officers.
The video film centres, internet cafes in the peninsula and the easily available mobile phones are sources of porno films available to the students in the peninsula, civil society sources said.
Meanwhile, the same sources alleged police and excise officials for getting bribe for allowing an illegal liquor bar to operate in Jaffna University surroundings.
The said bar had been raided twice on the insistence of Mallaakam Magistrate Court and its stocks confiscated along with a fine. Yet, the bar continues to function with the blessings of the authorities and local ruling party persons.
They further alleged that Sri Lanka Army (SLA) officers for establishing brothels in Jaffna University environment and along the coast of Jaffna lagoon in Jaffna town.
Thousands of persons from the South come to Jaffna daily now that the A9 route is open for travel 24 hours a day and this paves the way for women from the South to be brought to work in the brothels, the sources said.
The government, turning a blind eye to all these illegal activities, aims to corrupt the youths of Jaffna peninsula, the sources said.
