Lankan Speaker’s convoy attacked at Nagai

Members of pro-Ealam organisations hurled slippers at the convoy of Sri Lankan Parliament speaker W J M Lokubandara and tried to attack him when he was visiting the Vaitheeswaran Temple on Saturday. The police prevented them from nearing the Sri Lankan and arrested 11 persons.

Lokubandara was on pilgrimage accompanied by his family members.

When he arrived at Vaitheeswarankoil on Saturday morning, members belonging to the MDMK, VCK, Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam and Thamizhar Padukku Peravai gathered outside the temple and raised slogans against him.

“The protesters went berserk and tried to attack Lokubandara when he came out of the temple,” said a witness.

Police prevented them from nearing the Sri Lankan and escorted him to the convoy.

Lokubandara then proceeded to the Tirunallar Lord Saneeswara Temple in Karaikal. He however cut short his trip and cancelled his planned visit to Lord Amirthagateswarar Temple at Thirukkadaiyur.
