Lankan Tamils in India will be asked to return

Sri Lankan Tamils living in refugee camps in India would be asked to return home to lead an honourable life, if the former army chief Sarath Fonseka wins the presidential elections, said United National Party leader Dr Jayalath Jayawaradana at a press conference here on Saturday.

“We are grateful to the Indian and State governments for looking after them well.

All these refugees would be requested to return to their native land and lead an honourable life,” he said.

Accepting that the conditions at the Internally Displaced People’s (IDP) camps in the island nation were “bad”, the Sri Lankan leader also promised that the nearly 3 lakh people held in those camps would be allowed to settle in their native places.

The IDP camps were against the Lankan Constitution and international laws, he said.
