Matale UNP councilor’s house comes under gunfire

A group of unidentified men suspected to be supporters of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) opened fire at the residence of a United National Party (UNP) Municipal Council member in Matale town Saturday night. The UNP member was not in the house at that time. His family members who were inside, escaped without injuries, according to a complaint by the UNP spokesman.

The UNP member was threatened on the previous day, Friday, by some ruling party supporters to withdraw his support to General Sarath Fonseka and to support Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapakse.

He had lodged a complaint in this respect on Friday.
