SLA holds greater part of Ki’linochchi as HSZ

Normalcy has not been restored in greater part of Ki’linochchi district as Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has declared a large area of it as its High Security Zone, sources in Ki’linochchi said. Although Northern Province Governor, Major General G. A. Chandrasiri ordered all government offices to function from 1st January, many of them being located east of A9 road, have not been opened as they are caught within the HSZ, the sources added.

The Peace Secretariat of Liberation Tigers, Murukan temple, government departments, Co-operative Head Office are some of the important places within the newly established HSZ in Ki’linochchi.

Most of the government offices have not been renovated or provided with basic facilities.

The persons working in these offices are therefore forced to travel daily to work from Vavuniyaa or Jaffna, the sources said.

Only 6 of the 90 schools in Ki’linochchi district have begun to function.

As the number of families permitted to resettle being less the number of students attending school is also less, education department officials said.

Most of the eating houses and food stalls have not been able to reopen.
