Pre-election violence escalating, 800 incidents reported, 300 arrested

Sri Lankan Police has taken around three-hundred persons into custody in connection with pre- election related violence. The number of incidents of violence and unlawful activities has risen to eight hundred till Thursday afternoon, police officials in Colombo said.

Four deaths have already been recorded in pre-election violence and about eighty persons had been admitted in hospitals, and some of them are in serious conditions.

Fifteen to twenty violent incidents have been reported on a daily basis to the police and the most affected areas being the southern province and north western province, police said.
