Sri Lankan Police instructed to quell protests by opposition

Any demonstration against the government and the SL President Mahinda Rajapaksa organized by the opposition without permission would be dealt severely if peace is disrupted, the Sri Lankan Police has warned on Monday.

Following reports that the joint opposition is planning to stage a massive protest on Wednesday in Colombo against alleged presidential election malpractices, Police spokesman I.M.Karunaratne said that the police had not been informed of the protest demonstration organized by the joint opposition.

The police would use riot squads to control the situation, the Senior Superintendent of Police said.
