SL parliament extends emergency another month

Sri Lanka’s parliament Friday adopted a motion by a majority of eighty seven votes to extend the State of Emergency for another month. One hundred and two MPs of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) voted for the motion and fifteen from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the main opposition United National Party (UNP) voted against. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) parliamentarians did not participate in the voting.

Tabling the motion seeking the approval to extend the State of Emergency, the Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake said the emergency would be lifted shortly after the country is back to normalcy. The resettlement of Vanni internally displaced people detained in camps in Vavuniyaa is delayed due to the clearing of mines from the liberated areas is not complete.

Jagath Pushpakumara, a minister in the UPFA government requested the President to appoint a commission to review all judgements delivered by Sarath Nanda Siva when he was the Chief Justice of the SL Supreme Court. Sarath Silva campaigned for the General Sarath Fonseka in the recently held presidential election.
