Pro-JVP Sinhala weekly recommences publication

Pro-Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Sinhala language weekly “Lanka” appeared on the news stands Saturday in Colombo and several parts of the south after publication ceased earlier due to the arrest of the paper’s editor and threat to the printing establishment. The newspaper office was sealed by the police after the presidential election, but later, due to lack of evidence, Gangodawila Magistrate revoked police action, legal sources in Colombo said.

The ban was lifted by the Judge after Criminal Investigation Department (CID) failed to produce further evidence against the newspaper in connection with certain articles that were published in late January which the police claimed was a threat to the national security.

The newspaper appeared in news stands after a day the printing establishment that handled the printing of “Lanka” withdrew following threats from pro-government elements, spokesman of the “Lanka” newspaper said.
