Jaffna HRC attempts to close files of persons reported missing

Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna officials are attempting to close the files of persons reported missing in the period after 11 August 2006 claiming that the missing persons had gone abroad, the families who had made the complaints said. While Sri Lanka government continues to maintain that persons reported missing after arrest by its armed forces have left the country the action taken by Jaffna HRC officials seems to strengthen government’s stand, they further complained.

Thousands of complaints have been registered with Jaffna HRC of young men and women gone missing in Jaffna peninsula including those who had been arrested by government armed forces.

Jaffna HRC officials had not taken any constructive action to find the persons reported missing in the past.

Now the complainants are being called to Jaffna HRC office to find out whether they have any new information regarding those gone missing.

This course of action is being taken by the officials of Jaffna HRC with the motive of closing the files claiming that the persons reported missing have left the country, the complainants raised accusation.

It is to be noted that the fate of more than 800 young men and women gone missing from 1996 to 2000 in Jaffna peninsula after arrest by government armed forces still remains unknown.
