Sri Lankan military police Monday night arrested former commander of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and opposition candidate in the recent presidential elections General (retd) Sarath Fonseka, initial reports from sources close to Fonseka said. The arrest comes after he declared that he was prepared to witness against anyone who had committed war crimes.

Sarath Fonseka had also challenged Rajapaksa administration to arrest him if he had attempted to stage a military coup as claimed by the government.

“The government has not arrested me. The failure to take me into custody could only mean that the government claims are fabricated,” he had told the press Monday morning.
