SLA tightens fishing restrictions in Jaffna peninsula

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) which had imposed restrictions on fishing in Jaffna peninsula since its occupation for the last fourteen years is now tightening the restrictions, subjecting the peninsula fishermen to additional harassment, fisheries societies sources in Jaffna said. SLA compels the fishermen to renew their ‘fishing pass’ often while keeping many fishing jetties in several coastal villages closed to them, the sources further complained.

The restrictions on fishing are strictly imposed in the coastal villages of Tho’ndaimaanaa’ru to Point Pedro and Kattkoava’lam in Vadamaraadchi North and in villages up to Ma’nattkaadu in Vadamaraadchi East.

SLA imposes similar measures in many villages including Chuzhipuram, Thampiththu’rai, Maathakal and Kusumaanththu’rai in Valikaamam.

Fishermen in Jaffna peninsula are not allowed to fish in the seas of Jaffna peninsula without the SLA ‘fishing pass’ which they have to obtain from their local SLA camps.

SLA soldiers manning the coastal sentry posts send back the fishermen who try to go fishing without the fishing pass.
