International countries should urge Sri Lanka to reveal proposal to solve ethnic issue

Civil Society Organizations in Jaffna Peninsula requested Canadian Ambassador Mr. Pruce Levy to urge international countries to exert pressure on the Government of Sri Lanka to disclose immediately if it has any proposal to solve the ethnic issue, when the Ambassador met them at several places in the peninsula. President Mahinda Rajapakse who said that he will present the proposal after the presidential election now says that he will reveal it after the announced general election, the representatives told the visiting Canada Ambassador.

President Rajapakse and his government have failed to keep the promises given to the Tamils before the presidential election and the pre-general election promises will meet the same fate, they said.

No one had been allowed to resettled in their houses in the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) occupied High Security Zones (HSZ) in Jaffna peninsula as promised by the government and its ministers.

The resettlement of Vanni IDPs in their own areas is moving at snail’s pace despite their assurances, the representatives told Mr. Pruce Levy who listened to them with sincere interest, the sources said.

The representatives further told him that normalcy has not been restored either in the peninsula or Vanni.
