IDPs evicted from army HSZ in Valikaamam again asked to register their names

The residents of Valikaamam North evicted by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) to establish its High Security Zone (HSZ) have been asked to register their names with Thellippazhai Divisional Secretariat (DS) if they wish to be resettled in their properties, before Thursday. Meanwhile, IDP Welfare Organizations in Jaffna said that this is the sixth time the residents are being asked to register their names and added that this is another drama being staged in view of the forthcoming parliamentary election.

Prior to the presidential election promises were made to the IDPs that they will be resettled in their own places by government ministers and politicians. But so far none of them had been permitted to resettle as promised, the Welfare Organizations pointed out.

Following the above promises the residents of Maaviddapuram, Kollankaladdi, I’lavaalai East, Pannaalai and Veemankaamam constituting 11 Village Officers Divisions were permitted to visit their houses and properties during day time.

The residents who enter through the SLA check post at Thellippazhai in the morning have to get out of the HSZ in the evening as they are not permitted to stay overnight in their houses.

Applications are being called from the above residents who wish to be resettled in their houses.

Earlier, on the instructions of the Supreme Court assurances were made to commence resettlement by government officials and SLA high officers but so far none had been permitted to resettle in their houses, the welfare organizations said.

They further said that they will stage a protest demonstration on 1 March if the residents are not allowed to resettle in their houses before the end of February and that they will submit a memorandum to the Government Agent on the same day.
