15 independent groups pay deposit to contest Jaffna electoral district

Fifteen independent groups have paid deposit money to contest Jaffna electoral district until Thursday evening, sources in Jaffna said. Meanwhile, four independent groups out of the six which had paid deposit money submitted their lists of candidates at Jaffna Secretariat Thursday, the sources added.

Kathirvel Cheverl, Murugesu Nadesalingam, Nagamuthu Thanikasalmpillai, Mahintha Thilakumara Udugama, Ms. Chithra Thevathasan, Valli Nadarasa, Antony Thushara, Gnanapragasam Sithamparanathan and Murugan Kumaravel are the nine persons who had paid deposit money as independent groups Thursday.

Ms. Chithra’s husband Thevathasan arrested under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) is now in prison. He was attached as an advisor to the Tamil sections of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and Sri Lanka Film Corporation.

Antony Thushara is from South who had paid the deposit money.

Mahintha Thilakumara Udugama enters the fray as an independent candidate as Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) are jointly contesting Jaffna electoral district.

Meanwhile, five political parties including Sri Lanka Jathika Peramuna, United National Party, Socialist Equality Party and Democratic Socialist Front submitted their nomination lists to contest Jaffna electoral district Thursday.

Tamil Arasuk Kadchi (TAK) and Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) parties had submitted their lists of candidates earlier.
