JHU protests against Mano Ganeshan contesting Kandy

Supporters of Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), a political party of Buddhist monks, Saturday morning held a protest demonstration in Kandy against Mano Ganeshan, leader of the Democratic Peoples Front (DPF), contesting in the Kandy electoral district on the United National Alliance (UNF) ticket led by the main opposition party (UNP), political sources in Kandy said.

JHU supporters shouted slogans demanding Mano Ganeshan not to contest in Kandy and to return to his home town Colombo.

The JHU contested its first parliamentary elections on April 2, 2004, with all fielded candidates were Buddhist monks. At these elections the JHU won 6.0% of the popular vote, and nine out of 225 seats. The JHU advocates for Sri Lanka’s unitary constitution with meager devolution of powers as a solution to the present conflict.
