HC grants bail to 15 Lankan Tamils

The Madras High Court has granted bail to 15 Sri Lankan Tamils, who were arrested and remanded in judicial custody for offences under various sections of the IPC including Section 307 (attempt to murder).

The charge against Padmaraja and 14 others was that while they were being kept in the Special Camp for Refugees at Chengalpattu, they demanded the release of some of the refugees from the camp and observed a hunger strike in this connection, on January 2 last. The refugees attacked policemen when they attempted to prevent them from staging the agitation. They were arrested and remanded in judicial custody on the same day. Seeking bail, the 15 moved the Madras High Court.

Since the police personnel who sustained injuries in the clash, were discharged from the hospital and the accused were, after all, refugees from Sri Lanka, Justice S Nagamuthu said on Monday that he was inclined to grant the relief.
