Sri Lanka government has allowed around fifteen Non-government Organizations (NGOs) to assist the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Mullaiththeevu district in Vanni to create livelihoods for them, Mullaiththeevu Government Agent (GA) Ms. Imelda Sukumar said in an interview to the national Tamil daily Virakesari. Projects constructing 2700 houses in the two divisional secretary areas have begun and the President’s Work Committee has issued permission to around 15 NGOs to involve in helping the resettled IDPs, she added.
Most of the NGOs permitted have arrived in Mullaiththeevu district and they will stay and help the people with constructing houses, supplying drinking water and to find livelihoods, she said.
Mullaiththeevu Governement Secretariat which had been occupied by the military was handed over to the civil authorities from 1st March and administration activities have been officially started on Thursday, the GA said. Puthukkudiyiruppu Divisional Secretariat will temporarily function in Mulaaiththeevu Government Secretariat.
Until Thursday 20,245 persons of 6787 IDP families have been resettled in their own places while 846 persons of 284 families were resettled last Thursday in Vattaappa’lai and the divisional secretariat of this area too had begun functioning, she said.
The schools in the areas where people are resettled have begun functioning. 17 schools in Thu’nukkaay, 13 in Maanthai East, 3 in Odduchuddaan are the 33 schools now functioning in Mullaiththeevu district, she further said.
Dry food rations for six months under the World Food Programme are being distributed while paddy cultivation has been started in 4000 acres, according to the GA.
