Prabhakaran’s mother may want to return to India

Velupillai Parvathi, the paralysed mother of slain LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, may have to seek permission to enter India to get medical treatment and live with her Chennai-based daughter Jagadee swari Mathiyaparan, says a leading Sri Lankan politician who is related to her .

M K Sivajilingam, a leader of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation and a former MP, told Express here on Saturday, that Parvathi (79) had been suffering from partial paralysis for the past 10 years, and for this reason, she might fail in her attempt to go to Canada to live with her Toronto-based daughter Vinothini Rajendran.

Sivajilingam said that the Canadian authorities were known to reject applications on health grounds or inordinately delay the grant of permission to sick people .

Vinothini has been trying to get her mother to Canada after her father, Tiruvengadam Velupillai, died while in the “protective custody” of the Lankan army. But, her attempts have been in vain .

She was flown to Kulala Lumpur on March 6, where her husband has relatives .

But Parvathi preferred to be looked after by her own daughters, preferably Vinothini in Canada .

“The family is consulting lawyers about taking her to Canada. We expect some decision from the Canadians in a month or two. If unsuccessful, we will seek permission to take her to India for medical treatment,” he said .
