Election related violence escalating

Election related violence, mostly in the south of the country, is reported to have been escalating. The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Gamini Navaratne who is in charge of election unit said so far he has received one hundred and twenty two elections related complaints till Thursday. About fifty percent of complaints are connected to intra-party rivalry due to canvassing for preferential votes, he added.

Forty per cent of the incidents are connected to intra party clashes and about sixty persons have been taken into custody, he said.
