59,000 police, 20,000 army personnel to be deployed for election duty

Fifty-nine thousand police personnel and twenty thousand soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army are to be deployed on the polling day that falls on April 8 for election duty and to maintain law and order, according to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya.

He added the assistance of the three armed forces has been sought by the Police to ensure security during the election next week.

The police with the assistance from the state armed forces would also be utilized for the transportation of ballot boxes to polling stations.

They will begin work on April 6 after the campaigning for the polls ends, he said.

He added that the Police have received 219 election related complaints of which the majority was related to intra party rivalries.
