Election fraud feared in Jaffna electorate

The open participation of a high police officer in the election propaganda meeting of Minister Douglas Devananda at Nalloor Ilang Kalaingar Hall Sunday has triggered suspicion and fear that the police and Sri Lanka armed forces will support election fraud in favour of Douglas Devananda’s Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) and its ally Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), sources in Jaffna said.

Less than a hundred persons were present at the above meeting in which the said police officer sat on the stage with the minister and Jaffna Mayor, Ms. Yogeswary Patkunam.

Meanwhile, a secret plan is in the offing to distribute handbills defaming Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and All Ceylon Tamil Cogress (ACTC) illegally on the night prior to Election Day.

Police authorities in Jaffna had not taken any action against EPDP for a hand grenade attack alleged to be made by its men prior to presidential election, the sources said.

Police authorities have also failed to inquire into the allegation raised against EPDP for involvement in the abduction and killing of a teen-age student in Chaavakachcheari recently, they further said.

All the factions opposed to ruling UPFA alliance in the parliamentary election are keenly watching the proceedings.

Meanwhile, TNA held its last propaganda meetings in Vadamaraadchi, Nalloor and Paasaiyoor Monday while ACTC too conducted its last day campaign meetings in the peninsula.
