Rajapaksa speaks in Tamil defying hooters

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa insisted on speaking in Tamil, despite jeering and hooting from the Sinhalese speaking section of the crowd at an election meeting in the northern district of Vavuniya last Thursday, The Sunday Times reported.

“I am also a Sinhalese just like you, but I will speak only in Tamil, and if you cannot understand, then leave the venue,” an angry Rajapaksa told those who were hooting.

As the jeering continued, Rajapaksa said emphatically: “Since you have tried to interrupt me I will continue to speak in Tamil.”
