Uprooted civilians from Vanni in Vavuniyaa internment camps are forced to sell their dry food rations on the streets of Vavuniyaa as they are unable to fulfill their other pressing needs including milk food for their children, sources in Vavuniyaa said. Help from NGOs being unavailable they are driven to sell their dry food rations for less than half the market price to meet their other vital needs. The uprooted persons resettled in Vanni and in Jaffna district too face the same predicament, sources from Vanni and Jaffna said.
Sri Lanka government distributes the dry food rations to each family donated by Word Food Programme (WPF) of UNHCR which consists of five essential food items namely rice, wheat flour, sugar, lentils and cooking oil.
Though these rationed items are hardly enough for the families they are forced to sell them.
The uprooted Vanni civilians who have none to help them to fulfill their essential needs come out of the camps and sell their dry food rations for pitifully low price.
Leaders of political parties who claim that one of their main aims is to serve the uprooted Vanni people in camps have conveniently forgotten them in their frantic election campaign, civil society organizations in Vavuniyaa said.
