SLA constructs big bases in Vanni

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) occupying Vanni without allowing the uprooted civilians from resettling in their homes are busy engaged in constructing big bases in strategic areas in Vanni, sources in Vanni said. Meanwhile, the small numbers of civilians permitted to resettle in some areas in Vanni are subjected to harassment by SLA. Armed group of men forcibly enter their houses in the nights where there are young women, the sources further said. SLA soldiers do not permit the civilians to move freely in the nights. Even during day time they are forced to carry their National Identity Cards.

Hundreds of SLA soldiers are engaged in constructing a big base in front of Paali Nakar Maththiya Viththiyaalayam in Mallaavi with several layers of security precautions enclosing the streets in the area.

SLA is also engaged in constructing similar bases in Poonakari and its surrounding areas.

The families with young women dare not to remain in their houses as gangs of armed men forcibly enter their houses but gather into groups and spend the nights in safer places.

Neighbours joining together to drive away these gangs has become a daily occurrence, the sources said.

The persons harassed in this manner do not complain about the incidents to higher authorities for fear of drastic consequences.

Meanwhile, SLA soldiers are systematically obliterating all traces of Liberation Tigers in Vanni destroying their memorial monuments and heroes tombs.
