Now, Big B faces Tamil fury

The involvement of one of Bollywood’s iconic figures, Amitabh Bachchan in the International Indian Film Academy’s (IIFA) film festival in Sri Lanka in June this year has evoked strong protests from the Tamil film industry and that of some political parties and pro-Sri Lankan Tamil groups in the State. Tamil actors Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan, Vijay, Ajith and Surya have reportedly declined to take part in IIFA.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko and pro-Sri Lankan Tamil groups have strongly protested Amitabh Bachchan’s involvement in the IIFA. The awards ceremony will be held in Colombo from June 3-5, 2010.

In a statement here, Vaiko said Bachchan had committed a blunder by organising the festival in Lanka ruled by Mahinda Rajapaksa who had decimated lakhs of Tamils. “Will Amitabh organise the same festival in Pakistan which was instrumental for the Mumbai terrorist attack?”

Strongly condemning Bachchan for his decision, Sri Lankan Tamils Protection Movement coordinator P Nedumaran said not only artistes from Tamil film industry but also from the rest of the country should refuse to take part in the festival.

“If Amitabh, his son and Aishwarya Rai take part in the festival, then Tamils will boycott their films here’’, Film director Seeman said and added that the residence of Bachchan in Mumbai would be picketed on April 25.
