Police probing series of crimes in Jaffna

A series of kidnappings, murder and rape in Jaffna have sparked fears among residents that an organized group could be behind these incidents.

According to police, there have been at least two killings, one rape and two attempted kidnappings over the past month.

They said, in the first case, in early March, an O/L student was abducted and brutally killed after his parents refused to pay a ransom of Rs. three million.

This week, a gang abducted two people from Gurunagar demanding Rs. five million and Rs. two million respectively, from the relatives.

Police in a sting operation with the assistance of relatives were able to track down three suspects and the victims to an abandoned government building close to Jaffna town.

Earlier this month, an internally displaced teenage girl was gang-raped while on her way to visit relatives at Manipay.

In Kondavil on Friday, two men on a motorcycle attempted to grab a teenage girl, but were forced to flee after villagers intervened, police said.
