Notice on plea to close down refugee camp

A division bench, comprising justices Elipe Dharma Rao and K K Sasidharan, ordered notice on a plea to close down the Poonamallee special camp for Sri Lankan refugees and shift the inmates to other camps in the State.

In his PIL, Gangadaran alias Murthy, an inmate in the Poonamallee camp, submitted that originally he and others were kept in the Special Camp for Refugees in Chengalpattu. The inmates appealed to the government to shift them to some other camp, which had the basic facilities. As there was no action, they observed a hunger fast on February 2, 2010. A huge posse of armed police personnel attacked them indiscriminately. About 20 of the 33 inmates sustained serious injuries.
