Tracing Missing Persons Association to hold demonstration in Vavuniyaa

A mass demonstration is to be held in front of the Vavuniyaa bus stand 18 May to draw the attention of humanitarian organizations and law enforcement authority to the fate of thousands of missing persons after Vanni war last year, according to the convener of the Association of Tracing Missing Persons, Mr. K. Mahendran.

Mahendran has appealed to relatives, kith and kin of missing persons and humanitarian activists to attend the event and show their solidarity.

He said that his association has failed to obtain satisfactory response from government authorities regarding missing persons from uprooted families due to war and kept in detention camps and some in military custody.

About one hundred thousand uprooted persons are still in internment camps while another two hundred thousand uprooted persons after their release are wandering without any future and without proper security, he said.

“We made representation about them to the authorities concerned but we failed to receive proper response. Hence we decided to organize an attention seeking demonstration on May 18 around 10:00 a.m in Vavuniyaa opposite the bus stand that will coincide with the Government’s ‘Victory Day‘.”
