Thousands of Tamils dressed in black gathered at Queen’s Park on Tuesday to mark the one-year anniversary of the end of Sri Lanka’s civil war.
Police said there were about 5,000 mourners at the event in which participants held a candlelit vigil for the victims of the conflict.
On May 18, 2009, the Sri Lankan government declared victory in a decades-long civil war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam after launching an offensive that left thousands of people dead.
Last year, members of the Tamil community held daily protests on University Ave. near the U.S. embassy condemning the government offensive.
