Left allies in UPFA government for abolishing executive presidential system

The Common Left Front (CLF) comprising Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), Sri Lanka Communist Party (SLCP) and Democratic Left Front (DLF), constituents of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) have decided to submit proposals against continuing the executive presidency and to oppose the rescinding of the constitutional restriction for the incumbent president to contest for more than two terms. Instead they demand introduction of the post of executive prime minister.

The Common Left Front will hold a seminar at the National Library Association Auditorium on May 31 to discuss their proposals.

Vasudeva Nanayakkara, veteran DLF leader and one time Presidential Advisor to President Mahinda Rajapaksa said to media that the Common Front would propose the setting up of the post of an executive prime minister to replace that of the executive presidency.

The government has not revealed its proposed constitutional amendments to public. However the CLF thinks it is its responsibility to submit its own proposals for the common good of the country and for good governance," Minister D.E.W.Gunasekara, leader of the SLCP said.
