South Africa to assist widowed women in North Lanka

The South African government will assist Sri Lanka to uplift the living standards of women widowed during the three-decade-long war between security forces and the LTTE in the Northern Province and help in their children’s education.

During a three-day visit to the Northern Province, South African High Commissioner to Sri Lanka B M Pheto held discussions with the government officials in the province at the Jaffna District Secretariat in this regard.

Pheto had visited the northern Sri Lanka last Saturday.

The envoy also expects to meet the political party representatives, religious dignitaries and community leaders in the district in this regard, the ministry said in a statement.

The details of these widows and their families have been collected through Divisional Secretariats, the Defence Ministry said.
