South Indian Film Industry calls for boycott against IIFA to be held in Sri Lanka

Representatives of the South Indian Film Industry (SIFI) unions called for a boycott of the International Indian Film Award (IIFA) ceremony to be held in Sri Lanka in June which they described as a country stained with the blood of innocent Tamils, in a meeting held Friday at the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce premises in Chennai, according to SIFI release Friday . A request was extended to the North Indian Film Industry fraternity to boycott the IIFA function among other resolutions passed while it was stressed that the protest is not against the function but the venue chosen to hold it, the sources added.

The entire world is aware of the genocide of the innocent Tamils by the Sri Lanka Army and the Sri Lanka government and it is inopportune to hold the IIFA function in Sri Lanka as the horror still remains fresh in the hearts of millions of Indians, the press release said.

The IIFA function is to be held on 4, 5 and 6 June in Sri Lanka.

The following resolutions were unanimously passed in the Friday meeting:

Shootings and functions of South Indian Film Industry (SIFI) will not be held in Sri Lanka in the future.

SIFI will not cooperate with the Indian actors and film technicians participating in the IIFA function in Sri Lanka.

Films of the actors and actresses taking part in the Award function will not be allowed to be screened in South India.

To extend the request to the organizers of IIFA to hold the function anywhere other than Sri Lanka.

A committee consisting of 15 members was formed in the meeting to meet the IIFA organizing committee in Mumabai Saturday and persuade it not to hold the function in Sri Lanka, according to the press release.

South Indian film Chamber of Commerce, Tamil Film Producers’ Union, South Indian Actors and Actresses Union, The Federation of South Indian Film Technicians’ Union, Film Distributors’ Association in South India, Union of Theatre Owners in South India and the Union of South Indian Film Journalists were represented in the Friday meeting.
