Long way before Tissainayagam pardon can come into effect

“There is a long way to go before the presidential pardon for J. S Tissainayagam can come into effect’’ said Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP and Tissainayagam’s lawyer M. A Sumanthiran.

He added that there is still a lot of paper work to be done and many discussions to be had with the AG’s department.

“We are waiting to meet officials of the AG’s department to finalize matters. Hopefully we can get this done as soon as possible. Tissainayagam has lost almost two years of his life and we don’t want to prolong his ordeal,” Sumanthiran said.

He added that they have filed a motion to withdraw the petition they filed on September 15th 2009 against his conviction, as requested by the government.

“We did that in May, in fact. Since we were informed we had to withdraw the petition we made arrangements to do so.”

The request to withdraw the appeal is more a courtesy rather than a legal requirement said Sumanthiran.
