China wants to start fisheries project in Mullaiththeevu: SL Fisheries Minister

A Chinese company has applied to the Sri Lanka’s Fisheries Ministry to start and invest in a fisheries project in Nanthikkadal lagoon in Mullaiththeevu district, according to Sri Lankan Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne, a news report by the Daily Mirror newspaper said Monday. The report on Chinese move has come while Sinhala fishermen from South have encroached the coastal areas of Mullaiththeevu district.

Rajitha Senaratne added that the Chinese company was planning to breed sea bass, which is a delicacy in China.

“They had talks with us. They will now come up with their proposals. Sea bass is a delicacy in China. Besides, we are also planning to breed some other fish varieties targeting the export market,” he said according to Daily Mirror news report.

The Sri Lankan Minister also said that he would engage the Defence Ministry in Colombo very soon to relax fishing regulations in the seas off Mullaiththeevu.
