WFP opens office in Kilinochchi

The United Nations (UN) opened a World Food Programme (WFP) office in Kilinochchi. It would be expanded in due course including staff from the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), media reports said quoting WFP sources.

WFP sources said that the site earlier used as the office of the WFP had been destroyed due to heavy aerial and ground bombardment. The office was closed down in September 2008 due to the heavy fighting between government forces and the LTTE. Only four employees are now working and it is expected to deploy more to re-establish the monitoring of food supply to needy population in the area and to support the ongoing resettlement, media reports said quoting WFP
