Row on UN panel: Lanka in damage control mode

The Sri Lankan government has reportedly distanced itself from a call made by one of its cabinet ministers to hold UN staff in the country hostage, until the UN Secretary General dissolves the committee he had set up to advice him on alleged rights violations in Sri Lanka.

Asked by ‘Innercitypress’ to comment on Lankan minister Wimal Weerawansa’s call, UN spokesman Farhan Haq said on Wednesday that the UN had contacted the Lankan government over the news report in Daily Mirror Online, and the government had assured that the comments were the minister’s "individual opinion" and not the government’s. "Our security officials are aware of these remarks and will check if this official was quoted correctly and what he meant by that.
