Devananda, Varatharaja Perumal join hands in new forum

A group named ‘Tamil Political Parties Forum’ (TPPF) of nine Tamil Political parties, paramilitary cum political parties and activists allegedly backed by New Delhi and Colombo, has been formed with the aim to explore ways of finding solution for the problems of the Tamil people in the North and East, political sources in Colombo said. Varatharaja Perumal, Chandrahasan and PLOTE Siddharthan, already known to have close links with New Delhi, have joined hands with M.K. Sivajilingam, a former TNA MP, Anandasangaree of TULF, Pillayan from TMVP and Kumarakuruparan of Democratic People Front in creating the forum. The move has been initiated by Shereen Xavier of Home for Human Rights and Douglas Devananda, the leader of EPDP, who is aligned with Mahinda Rajapaksa government.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) ‘carefully’ avoided to take part in the meetings. TNA parliamentarian Mavai Senathirajah publicly stated that the TNA feared ‘hidden motives’ behind the move mooted by Devananda.

The Tamil National Peoples Front (TNPF) also avoided taking part in the inauguration of the forum. Informed sources said that the TNPF’s position was that it would consider participation when all parties, including the TNA, were willing to agree upon a minimum programme for the humanitarian needs of the Tamil people in the North and East.

Shereen Xavier, the executive director of the ‘Home for Human Rights’ organization, has been working with the move for some time. She had also attended the meeting held in Zurich last year.

Sri Lanka government, through its minister Douglas Devananda, was very much interested in wedging in KP and Karuna into TPPF, political observers in Colombo said.

The inauguration meeting took place 24 June and its second meeting 2 July in Colombo with the participation of nine Tamil organizations including the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) led by Anandasangari, the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) led by Douglas Devananda, the Eelam People’s Revolutionary Front (EPRLF) Pathmanaba faction led by Varatharaja Perumal, T. Sidhdharthan of People’s Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) and C. Chandrahasan.

Some members of TPPF did not entertain Douglas Devananda’s proposal to bring in Selvarasa Pathmanathan. They said that Mr. Pathmanathan was already functioning as an unofficial limb of Sri Lanka government carrying out its scheme.

Devananda’s efforts to make Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna a member of TPPF was also rejected as it was pointed out that Karuna being a prominent person of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is not entitled to join TPPF.
