Tension prevails in Veala’nai following alleged killing of nurse

More than a hundred residents of Veala’nai in the islets of Jaffna attempted to attack a Sinhalese doctor in Veala’nai government hospital Saturday morning on finding a native young woman nurse dead, hung inside the hospital, sources in Vela’nai said. Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) soldiers occupying the islets of Jaffna rushed to the scene and took away the Sinhalese doctor to their base, the sources said. The enraged residents allege that the Sinhalese doctor had killed the nurse and then hung her with a rope in an attempt to show that she had committed suicide.

The victim, a 28-year-old female nurse, who is a native of Veala’nai had complained to her superiors of indecent approaches by the Sinhalese doctor, some of the protesting residents said.

Due to the shortage of medical doctors in Jaffna peninsula many Sinhalese doctors have been appointed in the hospitals in the peninsula.

Tension prevails in Veala’nai where SLN soldiers and police are deployed in large numbers.
