Rajapakse, Wickremesinghe meet, discuss proposed constitutional reforms

Talks between Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse and Ranil Wickremesinghe, the leader of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) resumed Tuesday morning unexpectedly. Both met at the Presidential Secretariat and discussed about the proposed constitutional reforms, informed sources said.

The UNP last week decided to abandon the talks with Rajapakse following the cross over of two UNP parliamentarians Praba Ganeshan and P. Digambaram to the government ranks against the assurance given by the President that he would not accommodate any cross over from the opposition ranks.

The meeting between Rajapakse and Wickremesinghe Tuesday came as a surprise to the rank and file of the UNP and the government, political sources said.
