Roofing sheets given to Sri Lanka

High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Ashok K. Kantha on Wednesday handed over the first lot of the third consignment of galvanised corrugated roofing sheets to Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development.

The third consignment consists of 2600 MT of sheets valued at approximately $2.65 million and is meant to construct shelters for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North.

Mr. Kantha reiterated India’s deep commitment to contributing to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the North. He recalled that, during the visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in June 2010, India also announced a major initiative to undertake a programme of construction of 50,000 houses for IDPs in the northern and eastern provinces.

The modalities regarding the implementation of this commitment are being worked out. He underlined India’s commitment to infrastructure development in the North and added that New Delhi had already announced a line of credit of $800 million for the reconstruction of railway infrastructure in there.
